Because children’s immune systems are still developing, children often become increasingly sick during the fall and winter months. Fall is a time of year full of childhood illnesses, from common back-to-school illnesses to seasonal infections, like Influenza (Flu), RSV and COVID-19. Dr. Nancy Wick, Pediatrician at Pediatric Affiliates of Hampton Roads, joined Chris Reckling on The Hampton Roads Show to discuss how parents can protect their children from severe sicknesses this fall.

What Is Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)?

RSV is a respiratory illness that affects children younger than 2 years old more severely than older children and adults. Symptoms of RSV include repeated coughing, trouble eating, fever, and rapid breathing. Because of the severity of these symptoms, it is a common reason for babies to be hospitalized in the winter.

2023 is the first year where a preventative treatment is available for RSV that lasts the entire season. The previous preventative measure, Synagis, was only effective for a month and required repeated injections. Beyfortus™, now available, is a monoclonal antibody that is given as an injection, just like a vaccine, to prevent RSV.

Beyfortus™ is recommended for babies younger than 8 months old, and is given from October to March, like the flu vaccine. It is available to some older children as well, who have certain risk factors.

One problem we are having with Beyfortus™ is that insurance companies are not yet covering the cost of this immunization. Unfortunately, this will delay many children from being able to get it. We advise all families with children younger than 8 months old to ask their doctor about Beyfortus™ and check with your insurance plan to see if the cost is covered.

COVID-19 in Fall 2023

COVID-19 remains a common virus that affects both children and adults, and we are seeing an uptick this fall. Common symptoms include, but are not limited to coughing, sore throat, fever, and difficulty breathing.

COVID vaccines are advised for all children older than 6 months and a booster is now available this fall for children who have already had the primary series. Schedule your child’s COVID-19 vaccines or booster and give them the best possible defense against the severe symptoms of COVID-19.
